Five ways to say ‘anything’ in Irish

In Monday’s chat, Deirdre and Lorcán are looking for a place to park the car. When Lorcán points out a free parking space to her she says she can’t see anything:

Ní fheicim aon rud.
I don't see anything.

For anything she says aon rud. But that’s not the only way to say anything in Irish. Here are a couple of other ways to say anything together with negation in a sentence.

1. aon rud

Níl aon rud uaim. I don’t want anything.

Níl aon rud ite agam. I haven’t eaten anything.

2. rud ar bith

Níl rud ar bith uaim. I don’t want anything.

Níl rud ar bith ite agam. I haven’t eaten anything.

3. tada (sometimes dada)

Níl tada uaim. I don’t want anything.

Níl tada ite agam. I haven’t eaten anything.

4. faic

Níl faic uaim. I don’t want anything.

Níl faic ite agam. I haven’t eaten anything.

5. a dhath

Níl a dhath uaim. I don’t want anything.

Níl a dhath ite agam. I haven’t eaten anything.
